Change is that dirty six-letter word that literally immobilizes people right in their tracks. Alvin Toffler, Futurist, said “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” In other words, he is talking about the how of success.
Those individuals who can change on a dime so to speak will leave behind those who cannot. For the ability to change is the individual strategic competitive advantage. When an individual has an open mind, the willingness to learn new things while unlearning old things, he or she will be far more successful that those who refuse to unlearn, relearn or learn.
Think about technology. The release of the new Vista program by Microsoft is a good example. Many people do not want the program, myself included, because they do not want to unlearn what they know and relearn something new. Of course, the excuse of time to unlearn and relearn along with the stability of the program are always parts of the discussion. I know eventually I will need to learn this program, yet if I can save some precious time I will continue to use the Windows XP version.
The human brain is a processing center that enjoys working on automatic pilot. This conserves energy for the basic purpose of this incredible instrument: fight or flight. When we have to learn, unlearn and relearn, we are literally fighting our unconscious brain.
For years, I have written and delivered keynotes about the value of being a self directed learner versus a life long learner. Toffler was really directing his comment to the self directed learner who can learn, unlearn and relearn as the case necessitates. These individuals will outperform others who fail to adopt such an attitude.
So the master success question really is “Can you change on a dime?”
