In the UK stop smoking hypnosis is viewed critically by many scientific researchers, as is hypnosis in general. While hospitals and public health organizations recommend that people should stop smoking UK general practitioners, according to surveys, rarely recommend smoking cessation services. Their belief in the effectiveness of stop smoking programs is directly related to how often they recommend a program, even when it comes to prescription medications.

UK laws and regulations concerning tobacco smoking are a little behind those in the US. For example, the age at which a person can legally purchase cigarettes is currently 16. A national campaign, scheduled to take effect in October 2007, will raise the legal smoking age from 16 to 18. Smoking bans at hospitals and other workplaces have led to complaints from smokers, but officials are holding their ground.

In the US, the surgeon general advises that the single best thing that a person can do for their health is stop smoking. Public health organizations in the UK are beginning to make similar advisements.

Many feel that because of the new bans, regulations and health advisories, smokers need access to effective treatment plans and advice concerning how to quit. But, where should it come from?

As the recent surveys showed, doctors seem to think that it is not their responsibility to suggest specific stop smoking therapies to their patients. The National Health Service does provide free advice and support for smokers, but in order to stop smoking UK residents are pretty much on their own.

Studies in the US have shown that stop smoking hypnosis plans are 40-80% effective. But, as with other types of complementary or alternative treatment plans, critics use words like “charlatans” to describe those who provide hypnosis services. Luckily, the critics have not stopped practitioners from providing services for those smokers who desire them.

UK stop smoking hypnosis programs are not as popular or as readily available as they are in the US, but luckily self-hypnosis programs are available on the internet and may be quite effective.
